There is a global trend towards better performance and fuel economy. GM's Dexos1™ Gen 2 specification was introduced to stay ahead. With our new, Dexos1-compliant lubricants, Champion continues to meet the strictest industry standards.

GM has again pushed its standards beyond the industry baseline, requiring greater fuel economy while maintaining high performance and durability. As always, Champion has taken up the gauntlet. We’ve developed a product range that meets or exceeds GM’s new specifications.

What does dexos1 mean for my engine?

In recent years, GM has worked to create global lubricant standards under its dexos1 specification. Any lubricant that meets these standards can be used for GM vehicles anywhere in the world.
The biggest change in the new generation – called Dexos1™ Gen 2 – is that lubricants have to maintain high performance in engines that run hotter than before. Why? The higher temperatures of modern fuel efficient gasoline direct injection (GDI) and turbocharged GDI (TGDI) create more stress for lubricants. Dexos1 certification means that a lubricant still performs well at these high temperatures, outperforming most competitors on the market.

The next generation of dexos1™ lubricants also have to pass a series of demanding new engine tests:

  • Stochastic pre-ignition (LSPI) test: TGDI engines sometimes struggle with LSPI, but dexos1™ Gen 2 lubricants can mitigate this problem.
  • New European Drive Cycle (NEDC) fuel economy test: All dexos1™ Gen 2 oils have to meet the high new fuel-efficiency standards of GM vehicles.
  • Turbocharger deposit test: Turbochargers are placing greater demands on lubricants than ever, but dexos1 lubricants maintain performance even under this stress.
  • GM Oxidation (GMOD) test: Oxidation can erode a lubricant’s efficiency over time, but dexos1™ Gen 2 oils resist degradation better than competitors.
  • A battery of additional tests for cleanliness and durability ensure that dexos1™ Gen 2 lubricants represent the top of the market.

In the figure below, you’ll see how dexos1™ Gen 2 lubricants are higher-performing than ever before:
