The off-road heroes: STOU and UTTO

Champion Lubricants, engine oil, heavy duty, off road, motor oil

STOU, short for Super Tractor Oil Universal, and Universal Tractor Transmission Oil, or UTTO, have similar usages but they are not the same! in this blog we explain how you can get the maximum out of your tractor or off-highway heavy-duty vehicle by using the right product for the right application.

Tractors and other off-highway vehicles have to overcome heavy loads in extreme conditions. If you want to keep your equipment in pristine condition you will have to use the right lubricant at the right time. But what is the right lubricant for your off-road vehicle? An STOU or a UTTO?

STOU, the all-round heavyweight Champion

An STOU lives up to its name, it truly is a universal product. It can be used for a range of applications in your heavy-duty vehicles. The STOU is a motor oil but it can also be used as a transmission oil, wet brake oil and even as a hydraulic oil. These universal oils have a wide range of characteristics, of which the most import are:

  • Reducing friction
  • Reducing wear
  • Offering stability
  • Reducing oxidation
  • Retaining the efficiency of all systems

The combination of these traits enable you to use the same oil for several oil-demanding applications. One bottle for multiple applications? Sounds like a maintenance dream! Champion’s STOUs are capable of delivering great all-round performance for off-road vehicles. But not all vehicles can use this “one fits all” solution.

UTTO, the specialist

The requirements set by the original equipment manufacturers for engine oils are getting more complex as the engines are getting more advanced. This is where the UTTOs come in to play. Universal Tractor Transmission Oils also serve multiple purposes but they are never suited for keeping the engine itself lubricated. Their field of operations are the transmissions, hydraulic systems, wet brakes and clutches of your off-road vehicles. Champion’s UTTOs offer you the certitude that even the most advanced systems stay in prime condition for a powerful an reliable performance, task after task.

Knowledge is machine power

UTTO or STOU, which one should you use? Our advice is to look at the recommendation of the vehicle’s original manufacturer. When they ask for an engine oil meeting their specifications you will be able to match it to an STOU or a UTTO.

Let us use our Champion S.T.O.U. Farm 10W30 as an example. If you have to maintain a 2015 New Holland CR10.90 you will be able to use this STOU for the engine, gearbox, hydraulic system and hydrostatic drive. For these applications this particular STOU will be the ideal product for all of its lubrication needs.

A great example of the benefits of a well-selected UTTO is the Champion U.T.T. Oil 50. This oil blend is perfect if you want to retain the power of your Valtra N174 Direct. This UTTO is the eligible choice for your hydraulic systems and transmission. Our Champion OEM Specific 10W40 UHPD is the ideal engine oil for the lubrication of the CR10.90’s engine itself. The combined use of these products will offer maximal protection and stable performance.

With more and more different products it becomes more complex to find the ideal product for your vehicle’s needs. This is why Champion developed a great tool to assist you in finding the right oils for your equipment. Just fill in your vehicle’s brand and type, and we’ll show you which products will give your equipment the optimal treatment. This tool is easy to use and will show you which oil is suitable for which part of your vehicle!

Summary

  • STOU and UTTO can be used for a lot of systems but only an STOU can be used as an engine oil.
  • STOU makes changing your fluids less complex.
  • Some systems have requirements that cannot be met by just one STOU. A UTTO might be needed.
  • The UTTO is the more specialized oil for your specific lubrication needs.
  • UTTOs cannot be used as a motor oil.
  • Use our nifty tool to find the right oils for your vehicle following the original manufacturer’s specification.
